I attended the PRSSA ‘Get in the Loop’ Conference this past week, and was thrilled to speak with so many PR professionals who specialize in vastly different areas of our field. I always thought that starting off in one of the larger agencies was the best way to start; however, that’s not to say that some of the smaller agencies can’t offer some top-notch clientele.
Although the large agencies offer a variety of different clients and big time accounts, the smaller agencies offer great opportunities for networking. The smaller the agency the more you get to know your fellow colleagues, and building up contacts is just as important as building up clients.

In addition to Katie’s perspective, I would add that internships within smaller agencies also provide a great experience. I worked at a solo shop and a smaller agency before working at a large agency, and while each provided a unique experience, I still find my experiences at the smaller companies to be valuable in my career path. I worked at a large agency first and am now working at a small agency. I absolutely love working at a small agency. To those seeking jobs, small agencies are a fantastic opportunity to get your hands on a variety of projects and to network with great people (including presidents and CEOs).

Indeed, some companies will be looking for smaller agencies. We vetted a number of firms and after learning more about each through numerous conversations, we found that a smaller firm would be better-suited to what we wanted, and seemed to be more adept in the skills we required. Lots of companies like the assurance that they’ll receive more attention from a smaller firm than a large firm with more layers.

I haven’t had experience with a larger agency or company, but I’ve certainly found that with smaller ones, it’s easier to learn what makes the agency tick. Understanding personalities, learning more about team members, and becoming aware of internal agency mechanics are all parts of being in PR (and in the work world in general)… and they are all parts that I imagine are easier in a smaller agency. For me, understanding the organization I work for so intimately is one of the best parts of working in a smaller agency or company–though maybe everyone here who has experience in a large agency can give some examples otherwise.
Nice post–I am glad to see recognition for the smaller agencies after the Chicago PRSSA event. Everyone was so focused on the major agencies, it felt unfair. Thanks!

I felt like I heard a resounding “Start at a big agency!” from the pros at DePaul’s conference. While I plan on applying at some of them, I definitely won’t count out the smaller places (There was something about Dig that I really loved, I hope there are more places in Chicago like that!)
Where the best places to begin are are getting overwhelming.
